To Hell and Back (Almost): The Chelsea FC ’16-’17 Story

By Krishin Jethwani

Cast your minds back to September 24th. Antonio Conte’s Chelsea were trailing Arsenal by three goals to nil at half-time. A bright promising start, was followed by a disappointing draw , and two straight losses, and all fingers seemed to point to the horrors of last year. It was clear for all to see that drastic changes were needed and Conte wasted no time in adapting and tweaking Chelsea’s formation, system and style of football.

The Italian used that particular defeat as fuel to reignite the passion, hunger and desire throughout the squad and it has worked to great effect. The Blues are now sitting pretty at the summit of the table and many fans believe that they could be set for silverware this term.

In fact, Chelsea have now won 9 Premier League games in a row, scoring 23 and conceding just two during that span. It would be fair to state that the Blues are looking very strong as they look to get their hands back on the domestic title.

One of the main reasons for Chelsea’s resurgence this season has been Conte’s 3-4-3 system. David Luiz has never been renowned for his defensive qualities, but the Italian transformed the Chelsea star into a consistent option at the heart of the defence.

With the likes of Kurt Zouma, Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta at the back, Conte has a number of competent defensive talents at his disposal – and their key stars have all bought into his new-look scheme.

With away fixtures against Tottenham Hotspur, and champions Leicester City approaching, fans will be getting ready to travel in their numbers to support Conte’s men throughout the next few weeks.

If Chelsea continue to stay firm at the back, there’s absolutely no reason why the Blues cannot build a solid lead at the top of the Premier League table. At the end of the day, Conte has his side organised and primed to challenge for glory.

Diego Costa has emerged as the Premier League’s most lethal attacking threat, netting 12 goals in 15 games so far this season. The Spain international is by far and away the best striker in the top flight on current form and his rise to prominence, is a key reason for their incredible run of form.

As long as the likes of Eden Hazard, Victor Moses and Pedro continue to create opportunities, Costa will continue to feast and score goals. It is as simple as that…

Chelsea are on the verge of something special and all signs suggest that the Blues can lift the Premier League title this season. With the shrewd Conte at the helm, Chelsea can bring the glory days of silverware back to Stamford Bridge.
